The Bendovers

Family | PG

At first glance, the Bendovers seem like your typical suburban family—until you catch them outside, lined up in a row, eyes fixed on the ground, and their backsides swaying in unison. This eccentric family of seven has an unusual pastime: celebrating the small, overlooked wonders of the world beneath their feet. Whether it’s marveling at a trail of ants, debating the artistic merit of fallen lint, or cheering on blades of grass as they grow, the Bendovers are committed to their quirky rituals. When a nosy neighbor, Mr. Cranston, decides their odd behavior must be hiding something sinister, he launches a full-scale investigation. As rumors of a cult spread, the Bendovers must navigate unwanted attention, an embarrassing HOA meeting, and a documentary crew determined to expose their “secret.” Meanwhile, the youngest Bendover, eight-year-old Marcy, secretly dreams of leaving their bent-over lifestyle to stand tall as a gymnast—a dream she’s hesitant to share with her family.Heartwarming, hilarious, and unexpectedly profound, The Bendovers is a story about finding joy in the small things, embracing what makes you unique, and bending—not breaking—under the weight of judgment. By the time the credits roll, you might just find yourself looking at the world a little differently… though hopefully, from an upright position.

John Farrell

Nominated: Best Editing in the Men’s Room

The Bendovers shocked everyone as a sleeper hit, racking up multiple award nominations—including a nod to the brilliant John Farrell for best editing. The academy clearly couldn’t resist the many and varied angles of backsides that John so artfully showcased. Prolific, groundbreaking work, if you ask us! While John is known for his quiet and unassuming persona, his editing choices in this family film were anything but shy. With a masterful touch, he embraced bold creative liberties, ensuring every perfectly-timed booty shot added depth (and cheeky charm) to the delightful characters and their imaginative adventure. John’s thoughtful and audacious approach elevated The Bendovers to an unforgettable cinematic experience. One thing’s for sure—we’ll be keeping an eye on what John pulls off next.

In this film, she brilliantly uses magic markers to bring each quirky character’s unique perspective to life, creating a kaleidoscopic experience that is both thought-provoking and hilariously entertaining. The vibrant visuals draw us in, while the offbeat storytelling invites us to reflect—and perhaps even try to forget! Misti’s remarkable ability to blend humor with heartfelt moments makes this film a standout and a deserving contender for this year’s award.

Hope Rundle

Nominated: Best Director Blindfolded

A veteran of the awards, this seasoned director, really needs no introduction. Her previous nomination for The Nose Picker’s Apprentice - The Early Years, earned her a CAN in 2004. And then incredibly, nominated again for the sequel The Nose Picker’s Apprentice – The later Years…Much Later in 2014. Not surprising as with most sequels this was a total bomb. Not even sure why it was ever made it to the theaters. However, she is well loved by the academy. This new nomination is a deviation from those previous dramas, and has her moving into the animation genre. Buckee's-the Beaver's Adventure again showed that sadly, there are no limits to Hope’s willingness to humiliate herself for public amusement. But here she is! Up for another nomination!

Susie Schreiber

Nominated: Best Editing in the Men’s Room

You might remember Susie Schreiber from her 2014 nomination for Best Subordinate Female Actor Slashing and Screaming, thanks to her unforgettable portrayal of Jackie Longfinger in The Nose Picker's Apprentices – The Later Years... Much Later. Since then, Susie has traded her scream queen crown for the editor's chair, bringing her sharp eye and wit to the world of film editing. Her latest venture, Buckee’s – The Beaver’s Adventures, has earned her yet another nomination, this time for her exceptional work in animation editing. Rumor has it that much of the film's content was so flush-worthy that Susie chose to edit the entire project in the bathroom. Why she opted for the men's room remains a mystery—perhaps she was seeking a different perspective? With any luck, the red carpet interviews will plunge into this enigma and bring some answers to the surface!

The Churn

Disaster | R

Scientists call it The Churn, a cataclysmic event triggered by a mysterious energy surge at the Earth’s core that has thrown gravity into chaos. Oceans boil, rivers reverse, and cities crumble under the weight of nature spinning out of control. Governments are paralyzed, the military is powerless, and the only ones standing between humanity and total annihilation are an unlikely team of heroes.Jack “The Snake” Harrington, a hardened ex-plumber and Uber driver with a dark past, is thrust into action when he uncovers evidence linking The Churn to a classified government experiment gone horribly wrong. Joined by a disillusioned NASA scientist, a no-nonsense Navy SEAL, and a brilliant but reckless young hacker, Jack must lead the charge to shut down the experiment’s reactor buried deep beneath the Earth’s surface. With time running out and the planet spinning toward destruction, the team battles exploding sewers, catastrophic tidal waves, and violent gravitational anomalies in a desperate bid to restore balance. As the Earth tears itself apart, Jack faces the ultimate question: can he fix the unfixable—or is humanity destined to go down the drain?Packed with heart-pounding action, jaw-dropping visuals, and edge-of-your-seat suspense, The Churn is the Michael Bay-style doomsday thriller that will leave you breathless (and maybe a little afraid to flush).

Caitlyn Farrell

Nominated: Best Subordinate Female Actor Barefoot

This fearless performer is here and ready to stomp her way to victory in the disaster (and boy, do we mean disaster) flick, The Churn. With unflinching determination and toes firmly planted on the ground—literally—she delivers a killer performance as the unflinching character, Nawzia. Caitlyn's ability to command the screen, even while working barefoot alongside chaos and calamity, is nothing short of impressive. Whether she’s dodging debris, delivering dramatic lines, or stealing scenes with her grounded intensity, Caitlyn’s performance proves she’s a force to be reckoned with. This nomination cements her place as one of the most compelling (and unshod) talents in the industry.

Vihar Rai

Nominated: Best Special Effects Using Only One Arm

Vihar Rai, nominated for Best Special Effects for his work on The Churn, proves that sometimes less is more—especially when it comes to limbs. Known for his quiet and reserved demeanor, Vihar let his work speak volumes, delivering toilet bowl-blowing effects with literally one hand tied behind his back. For those who braved the theater, the immersive experience was unforgettable. The audience sat in tense anticipation, fully convinced they might be covered in shit at any second. Rai’s explosive artistry not only earned him his first nomination but also gave the actors something to hide behind—both literally and figuratively. A truly crappy (and we mean that in the best way) masterpiece of cinematic ingenuity

John Franklin Rinehart

Nominated: Best Male Actor in a Ten-Second Cameo

Reinhart, nominated for Best Male Actor for his role in The Churn, is a visionary entrepreneur, filmmaker, author, and business strategist dedicated to transforming ideas into impactful experiences. As founder of Austin Film Crew, John has established himself as a leader in the film production industry. No wonder he decided to take a break and do a little acting. Clearly, that worked out, because here he is with a nomination.Fans of Reinhart might have expected a nod for directing, producing, or some other area he’s actually known for, but no—he had to snag one for playing pretend. Just goes to show that when you’re good at everything, the universe sometimes lets you get away with being a show-off. Reinhart’s nomination proves that even when he’s out of his lane, he’s still somehow in pole position.

Africa Dunbar

Nominated: Best Makeup Artisan Employing Magic Markers

Africa Dunbar has colored her way into the CAN Awards with her first-ever nomination, earning Best Makeup Artisan Employing Magic Markers for her boundary-pushing work on The Day After Yesterday. Armed with nothing more than a pack of markers and a fearless imagination, Dunbar turned what could have been a smudged mess into a masterpiece of cinematic face-painting. Blending bold strokes of genius with a fine-tipped attention to detail, her work is nothing short of remarkable. Dunbar’s artistry didn’t just stay within the lines; she completely redrew them, proving that sometimes, the sharpest tool in the kit is a marker cap. This nomination puts her firmly on the map, and we can’t wait to see what she sketches up next!

Monica Elbjorn

Nominated: Best Subordinate Female Actor Barefoot

Monica wanted this role so badly that she practically turned herself into a one-woman production crew. She stepped up as caterer, janitor, chauffeur for the producer, and agreed to do it all for free—talk about dedication! But let’s not let her behind-the-scenes hustle overshadow her on-screen brilliance. That said, Elbjorn delivered a tender, tear-jerking portrayal of Sumday Kums, the destitute cousin taken in by the Tumoro family in this groundbreaking Futuristic Period Piece, The Day After Yesterday. Her commitment to the role, both on and off the set, proves she’s a force to be reckoned with in every sense.

Nick King

Nominated: Best Dumpster Diving Set Design

Another exciting nominee for this year's CAN awards is none other than the extraordinarily talented Nick King. With his background as a goldsmith, Nick approaches the art of dumpster diving with a unique flair that sets him apart from the rest. He has an uncanny ability to see potential where others see refuse, turning discarded materials into splendid works of art. His renowned skills and discerning eye enable him to transform even the lowly pull tab from a can into something truly magnificent and awe-inspiring.We at the academy were absolutely captivated by the remarkable craftsmanship displayed in the many embellishments on the set of The Day After Yesterday. Each piece reflects Nick's imaginative vision, breathing new life into what would otherwise be overlooked materials. His artistic touch not only enhances the visual storytelling but also serves as a powerful reminder of the beauty that can be found in the most unexpected places.Nick's ingenuity and resourceful spirit have truly elevated the film, making it a standout contender in this year's awards. As audiences explore the enchanting world he has created, they can't help but marvel at the creativity and artistry that shine through every detail.

Shawna Rai

Nominated: Best Producer Pinching Pennies

Many of you will remember the meteoric rise of the then, Shawna, who won Best Producer for her debut film Debbie and the Lizard Man in 2004. That stunning success catapulted her into the spotlight—and then straight into oblivion. For nearly two decades, not a peep was heard from the enigmatic producer. But now, like a phoenix rising from the ashes, Shawna Rai is back and reclaiming her place in the industry with the penny-pinched production of The Day After Yesterday. This bold and imaginative futuristic period piece has left audiences and critics alike in awe, proving that Rai’s talent and vision remain as sharp as ever. It’s no surprise that such a boundary-pushing production has caught the attention of the CANs. With this triumphant return, Shawna Rai is once again a force to be reckoned with in the world of film.

Oops! Wrong Bed!

Musical | PG-13

Dizzy and her childhood best friend Stella are living their best lives in their cozy apartment, where every day feels like a perpetual slumber party. Wrong Bed! is a hilarious, heartfelt, and wildly unexpected tale of friendship, love, and the dangers of skipping your glasses.

Falyn Lazarus

Nominated: Best Actress by Process of Elimination

We are thrilled to once again celebrate the phenomenal talent of Falyn Lazarus, who is lighting up the CANs this year with her standout performance as Dizzy Misstep. After drinking too much at a costume party, she discovers that neither she nor her friend is in the bed they thought they were in the romantic musical Oops! Wrong Bed! A cult favorite among insomniacs worldwide, this film—and Falyn’s memorable number “Oops, Wrong Bed!”—has left audiences humming and laughing into the early hours. This marks Falyn’s fourth nomination, a testament to her tenacity and unmatched knack for nepotism. While Oops! Wrong Bed! might not have the prestige of La La Land or A Star is Born, it proves that Falyn can work her magic in any setting—especially one with her name already on the marquee.

Mike Stegen

Nominated: Best Dumpster Diving Set Design

Mike Stegen may be a first-timer at the CANs, but his nomination for Best Dumpster Diving Set Design for Oops! Wrong Bed! feels like a no-brainer. Known as the “set master with a garage full of tools,” Stegen brought his resourceful magic to this musical romp, crafting an entire bedroom set from treasures salvaged from the dumpster behind Lowe’s. Like a frenzied game of Tetris played by a sleep-deprived carpenter, Stegen whipped the pieces together in record time, sending dust and debris flying like confetti at a budget party. The end result? A set that’s equal parts hilarious and oddly heartfelt, much like the film itself. While we’re not sure if this creation will win him the CAN, it’s definitely earned him a permanent spot in our list of “designers to watch… from a safe distance.”

Paris Rumbolz

Nominated: Best Musical Performance of a Performance

She has left an indelible mark on this cult-favorite film. Could this be her first win? We’re betting the covers on it!

Picnic on a Bike

Comedy | PG

Percy and Rusty might just be the world’s worst tandem cyclists, but they’re determined to prove that nothing—not traffic, gravity, or common sense—can stop their dream of the perfect picnic on wheels. Percy, an overenthusiastic pedaler with zero spatial awareness, rides like a clown fleeing a haunted circus, while Rusty, his snack-obsessed passenger, treats the picnic basket like an all-you-can-eat buffet. Together, they’re a two-wheeled disaster waiting to happen. As their misadventures roll through town, chaos ensues: pedestrians dive for cover, a rival cyclist gang gives chase, and a high-speed encounter with a runaway ice cream truck sends Percy and Rusty into the annals of local legend. Along the way, they accidentally ignite a neighborhood feud, turn a quiet park into a slapstick battlefield, and discover that their poorly planned escapade might just be the most fun they’ve ever had.Packed with laughs, pratfalls, and an absurdly high carbohydrate count, Picnic on a Bike is a ridiculous romp that asks the eternal question: who thought this was a good idea? (And why are we so glad they did?) Grab your basket, hold onto your handlebars, and get ready for the comedy ride of the year!

Suzie Flachman

Nominated: Best Dumpster Diving Set Design

Suzie Flachman may be new to the movie industry, but her knack for creating unforgettable settings has already earned her a nomination for Best Dumpster Diving Set Design on Buckee’s – The Beaver’s Adventures. Suzie’s career started in the most whimsical way imaginable—designing the iconic open field for the TV smash Teletubbies! Barely more than a child herself, she turned rolling hills and sunshine into a cultural phenomenon. Fast-forward to today, and Suzie has proven her flair for the unconventional by transforming trash into treasure with her work on Buckee’s. The gritty charm and imaginative details of her dumpster-dive designs brought this quirky film to life. We might not know exactly how she landed this gig, but we’re all certain it’s been one wild ride. With a debut this bold, Suzie Flachman is one to watch.

Jennifer Hunter

Nominated: Best Actress by Process of Elimination

This is Jen Hunter’s first nomination, and it’s well-earned for her portrayal of the spunky Rusty Spokes in the over-budget comedy flick Picnic on a Bicycle. While the film itself seems destined to be forgotten before the awards ceremony even ends, Hunter’s performance is anything but forgettable. Her stamina and flair shone through a grueling production packed with an absurd number of terrifying stunts, all demanded by a director who clearly had no chill. The chaos didn’t stop with the stunts, either. Barely halfway through filming, all nine custom bicycles manufactured for the movie met untimely and dramatic ends, rendering them completely unusable. From that point on, the production resorted to using cardboard cutouts of the bikes, a choice that was as hilarious as it was practical—and a massive relief for the battered cast. Despite these challenges, Jen pedaled her way into the hearts of audiences and proved she’s a force to be reckoned with, even when the wheels fall off—literally.

Hillary Pettit

Nominated: Best Director Blindfolded

Hillary Pettit has earned her first nomination for her ambitious, yet not-so-hilarious comedy, Picnic on a Bicycle. This film has left audiences and critics alike scratching their heads in confusion while actors find themselves nursing sore behinds from the numerous mishaps both on and off screen. As a passionate runner and weight lifter, Hillary apparently expected her cast to match her impressive level of fitness and strength, much to everyone’s chagrin. The production was riddled with setbacks, beginning with the ambitious stunts that resulted in injuries to nearly the entire cast and the decommissioning of nine custom bicycles. In a creative (yet amusing) twist, cardboard cutout copies were hastily substituted for the real bikes in the final scenes, drawing plenty of chuckles from those in the know.Despite the chaos, Picnic on a Bicycle stands as a testament to Hillary's relentless dedication to her craft—some might even call it ruthless! Her commitment to pushing boundaries and her unique vision create a memorable cinematic experience, even if it’s not exactly what viewers expected. As she navigates the bumps in the road, one can’t help but admire her tenacity and passion for storytelling!

Gary Schreiber

Nominated: Best Male Actor in a Ten-Second Cameo

Gary Schreiber is clawing his way back to the spotlight after a decade of box office flops and financial disasters, proving once again that some talents just refuse to fade quietly. Schreiber’s previous glory came in 2014, when he snagged Best Actor for his role as Shears Deftly in the cult classic Bush Tamer: The Master Barber Returns. Now, with his latest nomination, he’s back to terrify (and perplex) audiences in Uncle Scary and His Equipment. Despite its baffling premise, the film has somehow managed to develop a loyal following and hold its own at the box office, cementing Schreiber’s status as the king of creepy cameos. Whether he takes home the CAN or not, one thing’s for sure: Uncle Scary won’t be leaving our nightmares anytime soon.

Brian Smith

Nominated: Best Subordinate Male Actor in a B Movie

It’s no shock that Brian Smith has earned a nomination for his gritty and bruised portrayal of Almust Thur, the rough-and-tumble sidekick and understudy to the infamous Uncle Scary in the block-knocking Uncle Scary and His Equipment. Smith’s commitment to the role is undeniable, and rumor has it, many of the injuries and accidents seen on screen weren’t scripted but were actual mishaps during filming. In true method-acting-meets-madness fashion, the actors were reportedly forced to soldier on through each scene until they met the director’s exacting standards—medical aid withheld until the final “cut.” Perhaps it’s this no-holds-barred approach that explains the raw, heart-wrenching performances delivered by Smith and his co-stars. Despite—or maybe because of—the chaos, Smith shines, proving his mettle in the world of B-movie brilliance.

Heidi Johanna Reinhart

Nominated: Best Costume Design Under Duress

Heidi Reinhart has snagged her first CAN nomination for Costume Design, and it’s well-deserved for her exceptional work on the horror film Uncle Scary and His Equipment. Though new to the CAN spotlight, Reinhart is no stranger to recognition in the industry, having already made waves with her unforgettable designs in Sadie’s Slippery Skivvies and The Bald Man Danced Naked. The big challenge for Wagner on this project? Navigating around Uncle Scary’s, shall we say, unusual equipment. Rumor has it, many designers were eager to tackle this gig—though the sources for this tidbit are about as reliable as a B-movie plot. The role ultimately landed in Reinhart's capable hands after she reportedly won an arm-wrestling contest against her competitors. Talk about earning it! Kudos to Heidi for her creativity, tenacity, and literal strength.

Cheyenne Amen Dunbar

Nominated: Best Musical Performance of a Performance

Making his first-ever appearance at the CAN Awards, Cheyenne Amen Dunbar has taken the industry by storm with his nomination for Best Musical Performance of a Performance for the electrifying title track of Unleash the Flying Monkeys. Dunbar’s raw, uncaged talent shines in this high-energy anthem, which combines primal emotion with razor-sharp wit. The song encapsulates the chaos, mischief, and unexpected depth of the film itself, cementing Dunbar’s reputation as a master of musical storytelling. Industry insiders are calling his work “chaotic brilliance,” while fans are already demanding a follow-up single. Whether he wins or not, one thing is certain—Cheyenne Amen Dunbar is no one-hit wonder. The monkeys have been unleashed, and so has Cheyenne.

Anissa Lloyd

Nominated: Best Costume Design Under Duress

A fresh face on the red carpet, Anissa Lloyd has earned her first CAN nomination for Costume Design with her creative work on Unleash the Flying Monkeys. While her past projects, Occam's Razorblade and Annie Get Your Guts, hinted at her potential, it’s this nomination that puts her firmly on the map. Tasked with balancing the chaotic needs of a flying monkey ensemble and a demanding human cast, Lloyd proved she could hold her own under immense pressure.Insiders credit her inventive use of materials like ribbon, chewing gum, and sterile gauze for pulling off costumes that somehow worked in this delightfully bizarre production. Word has it, her steady hand and willingness to collaborate with director Hope Rundle kept the entire shoot from spiraling into madness. Lloyd’s work here signals an exciting beginning to what we hope is a long and inventive career.

John Stegen

Nominated: Best Subordinate Male Actor in a B Movie

Taking on the role of the Captain Bobo in the action-packed chimpfest Unleash the Flying Monkeys, John Stegen’s natural screen presence (and complete disregard for personal space) turned him into an unintentional scene-stealer. Whether it was his head, arms, or legs, Stegen’s limbs were everywhere they weren’t supposed to be, upstaging his co-stars in ways no script could have anticipated. This year marks Stegen’s first-ever CAN nomination, a milestone that highlights his knack for turning chaos into comedy gold. Director Hope Rundle, with no extra footage to spare, had no choice but to embrace the madness, transforming Stegen’s accidental photobombing into some of the film’s most laugh-out-loud moments. Love him or hate him, Stegen’s performance has cemented its place in cinematic history as one of the most gloriously unpredictable parts of this already bananas-bonkers production.
